DMV-Avus-Rennen. 1930.
Beginning in 1921, Matejko applied his interest in technology and sports to the racetrack, where he acted as draftsmen—and even tried his hand at driving the race cars. AVUS was one of the many tracks he frequented, and here he exhibits his finely tuned understanding of movement, speed, and mechanical power. Of his work, he said, "The portrait does not lure me. I am primarily interested in the 'happening,' and so I always see man at the center of an event, in the full action of his life's expressions. Movement is life, and the problem of the presentation of this life moves me." Provenance: Hans Sachs Collection.
